New divers are often confused by the vast array of all things SCUBA. Here, I’ll try to cut through some of the nonsense out there and focus on how to develop your own style as a diver.
There are so many things to think about in SCUBA. Here is just a short list of some possibilities:-
Which training Agency to use?
Which dive school club?
What kit to get?
Where to dive?
How to configure kit?

BCDs are an essential component of SCUBA set ups. The BCD provides:-
A mechanism for establishing and maintaining buoyancy for the diver.
A means for attaching the air / gas supply to the diver.
There is more to BCDs than just buoyancy though. The following article describes some key things that you might want to consider when selecting a BCD for recreational SCUBA. Continue Reading »
Today, I stumbled on a terrific idea that’s designed to cut down the amount of spam that comes through your email in box. It’s an online service called SpamAvert.
This trip was organised through Berkshire Divecrew as part of PADI Project Aware International Clean-up Day.
Nine of us hit Chesil Beach to do our bit for the environment. Chesil beach is huge and extends for 18 miles so we couldn’t clean up the whole thing in just one day! We did a small area of about 30 x 20 metres. Even in this small area, we managed to collect 3 large plastic rubbish sacks of rubbish including loads of plastic items, discarded sanitary products, fishing line and hypodermic needles.
Apart from the beach clean-up on the surface, a few of us ventured below the waves to pick up litter. To be honest, the underwater area was relatively clear of litter although we did find some of the ubiquitous discarded fishing line.
One of the highlights of the day was the Cuttle Fish! I was lucky enough to have my camera with me.

Check out the flashing body colours! These animals are very cool in my opinion.
